PDP Alleges FG Using DSS To Influence Election Tribunals

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of plotting to use the Director-General of Department of State Security (DSS), Lawan Daura, to interfere in some election petitions pending before the tribunals across the country.

The PDP said Daura would be used to intimidate the panels to achieve some set goals of the APC.

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, disclosed this at a briefing at the end of the weekly meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

He said the party has got information that the DSS boss has invited some people handling election cases in Rivers and other states to discuss matters with them, with a view to using them to influence members of the tribunal.

Metuh stated that, “The NWC of the PDP has uncovered plots and plans by the newly appointed DG, DSS, to intervene and interfere on political issues, especially tribunal matters.

“In that regard the NWC has been made aware that the new DG, DSS, has even invited some people in relation to Rivers tribunal and other states and is trying to discuss such matters with tribunal members.

“The PDP alerts the national and international community that this is gross interference in democratic  affairs and that it can lead to authoritarian regime.

“If it is enthronement of draconian regime; PDP decries the attempt to enthrone draconian regime where security forces and other apparatus of the ruling party would decide to be influencing election matters and outcome on behalf of the ruling party.”

The PDP spokesman also berated the APC for condoning what he called “illegal dissolution of local government councils” in Plateau and Katsina states, where the APC is in control, without valid court judgements.

Metuh argued that in Rivers State where a court has dissolved local government councils illegally put in place by the past administration in the state, the police have interfered and stopped the caretaker committees appointed by the state government.

He warned that government would be held accountable for any breach that may be noticed in the handling of the tribunal cases, especially in states being controlled by PDP.
