The Nigeria Wheelchair Basketball Federation (NWBF) said on Tuesday it would intensify efforts at enhancing its team’s preparation ahead of the 2016 Paralympic qualifiers in Staoueli, Algeria.

Victor Anusa, Secretary of the federation told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the qualifier would hold from Oct. 28 to Nov. 8.

Anusa said that players were already going through a series of training sessions at the National Stadium, Lagos to ensure that the country qualified for the Paralympics in Brazil.

“Nigeria was among the countries invited for the upcoming paralympic Games by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation-Africa.

“Our players started training soon after we received the invitation for the qualifiers; we know the impact of early preparation for major events like this,’’ he said.

He added that 13 men and 13 women players would be selected to represent the country in the qualifier.

The secretary, however, appealed for adequate support from the government, private bodies and philanthropists to enhance the team’s chances of qualifying for the Games.

“The team needs all forms of support to have a good outing in Algeria and we have written to sponsors and we are expecting to get feedback from most of them.

“Hon. Ladi Adebututu-Keshinton, a federal legislator has responded to our appeal for support. We are thankful for his prompt response and we hope others will also respond,’’ he said.
