The Para-Soccer Federation of Nigeria (PFN) has said its ultimate goal is the attainment global recognition like other sports in the shortest time possible.

Its President, Misbau Lawan-Didi, said this in an interview on the sideline of the ongoing 2015 National Para-Soccer Tournament in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to him, the federation is working hard to promote para-soccer so that Nigeria can take the credit as the originator of the game.

“We want to see Nigeria at the continental level and also at the international paralympics committee level so that it will be played at the Paralympics as every other developed sports.

“Being people affected by polio, we are determined also to promote the image of this country.

“Among the sports we have in this country, it’s few that have been invented in Ngeria among which Para-soccer is one of them.

“So, in the world of disability in Nigeria, its only para-soccer that was invented in this country; other sports that Nigerians are investing money are brought into the country.

Misbau said plans were underway to give para-soccer an international look in addition to making it more attractive and acceptable in different African countries’ exhibition matches.

“We play the game with bare palms but we want to ensure that players wear gloves henceforth, during matches,’’ he said.

He commended the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Alhassan Yakmut, for supporting the federation, including the sponsorship of the ongoing tournament.

Misbau also applauded the contributions of Rotary International, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, World Health Organisation, UNICEF and other agencies toward the development of the sport in the country.

The defending champions Team Katsina white-washed their Rivers counterparts 7-1, while FCT thrashed Zamfara 5-0 in the matches played so far.
