Panic in A/Ibom over consumption of poisonous meat

Fear and anxiety of possible outbreak of  cancer and liver problems has taken over members of the public in Akwa Ibom due to the sales and consumption of toxic skin meat popularly called ‘Ikpa Ebola’.

The confirmed poisonous meat which has been on sale for the past four months, Daily Independent gathered, is being smuggled into the country from Europe through a powerful intermediary whose identity is still being trailed by officers and men of the state security Service (SSS).

Low income earners who patronize the meat are likely to be exposed to serious health conditions such as diarrhea, hypertension, cancer and liver problem due to high quantity of salt used for its preservation and sometimes abnormal growth in the body.

In a desperate move to rid the markets of such products and forestal the danger of contraction of diseases the  Akwa Ibom state government through its Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources has put in place a sensitization team made of health experts to arrest those behind the sale of the meat.

Though any arrest is yet to be recorded, the Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Godwin Afangideh, while briefing journalist at the weekend said the state government has taken proactive measures to rid Akwa Ibom markets of the sale of the poisonous meat.

Afangideh, who spoke through his Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Obot Obot in his office at Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat said     the Ministry on discovery of the sale of the meat in the state has carried out a sensitization campaigns in all local and urban markets, warning the public to be wary of what they eat and drink.

His words “The state government through the Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry has embarked on a sensitization campaign to some markets in local governments to go and talk to the about the danger of the meat.

“The sensitization which was led by a veterinary officer in the Ministry went from one market to another talking to people on the imperatives of to watch out for toxic meat following reports of its importation into the country’’.
