In the bid to arouse the interest of young people in entrepreneurship and project management, Pace Project Management Consulting Limited, a Lagos-based project management consultancy company, organised a free seminar for young people.

Adeola Adetoyi, chief executive officer of the company, spoke to Independent after the event. He said that the objective of the seminar was to make young people to embrace entrepreneurship and self-employment in the face of dwindling jobs in the country. Excerpts:

What does the company do?

The company is into the training of individuals to become project management professionals that are certified by the Project Management Institute.

We also train people in risk assessment. We are the Nigerian representatives of Green Project Management; this is the body that regulates project management and we are their representatives in the country. Wee are also their training body in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

What is your background?

My background is in chemical engineering and after I had worked for many years, I decided to be on my own and form a company that renders project management services to Nigerians. I went into project management about ten years ago.

Why did you organise the seminar? Having realised the importance of project management in the development of the national economy and having practised the profession for ten years, I felt there was the need to impart the knowledge of project management other people, especially the youth. I am doing this because irrespective of your discipline, project management is very relevant.

Where is the passion, the drive to do this coming from?

I like to interact with people and I also like to organise people. The day I was assigned the responsibility of a project manager at my former place of work, I received commendation for the way I planned, organised and executed the job.

How can you help a small business owner to grow?

I can help the business owner in the area of management. I can also help them in the area of planning. Starting up is very important and when you are starting, it is very important to have a viable plan. You need to plan for five years and ten years and ask yourself what you want to achieve in those years. These are the services we render to small business owners.

How long have you been the business of project management?

I have been a project management expert in the last 11 years, but established Pace Project Management Limited last year.

How has it been?

It has not been easy it is not easy to combine your paid job and your passion. You need to weigh the two and strike a balance. Because of the interest and passion I opted for project management. The company has been going to secondary schools to impact the knowledge of project management to students. We have been going to secondary schools to teach students soft skills, which they need to excel in whatever they do.

When you say soft skills, what exactly do you mean?

We have hard and soft skills. Hard skills are those skills that are acquired in formal settings like schools. The training an artisan gets is hard skill. Soft skills are hardly thought in schools; things like commutation, decency, decision-making, problem solving, information and so on are hardly taught in formal settings like schools. Over time, one needs to develop them in order to excel in life. You need to have them to be able to move to the next level. In the present time, promotions in most organisation are based on the level of soft skills one has and not the hard skills one possesses.

How can one become a project management expert?

If you want to become a project management expert, one of the key things you need to have is soft skill. If you have the soft skill, then you have the tendency to become a project management expert. You also need to get trained in the field.
