Labour unions in Osun State have resolved to boycott the activities marking this year’s May Day over what they described as non-payment of their five months’ salaries by the state government.
A source told our correspondent that the labour leaders took the decision to back their protest over non-payment of their salaries in the past five months.
Chairman of the factional Trade Union Congress, Francis Adetunji, contended that workers cannot be celebrating when they have not been paid since the beginning of the year.
“No May Day celebration this year. That is the decision of the entire workers in Osun State,” he stated.
“The last salary we were paid was part-payment of November salary. Since then, we have not collected any salary. We will not celebrate the May Day
because our salaries are not paid,” he stated.
The TUC factional chairman debunked the claim in some quarters that the refusal of Governor Rauf Aregbesola to approve the budget proposal for the Workers’ Day celebration was responsible for the call on workers to go on a three-day warning strike last week.
He said the only request workers made to the governor was that he should look for money by all means to pay workers.
“We are hungry. I am very serious; our workers are very hungry and only those who are close to the workers will know the severity of the hunger,” he stated.
