The Osun State House of Assembly on Thursday said it was determined to outlaw street trading and illegal markets in the state.

Mr. Najeem Salaam, House Speaker, said this at plenary in Osogbo during the consideration of a bill on street trading and illegal markets.

Salaam said it would become an offence for any person to engage in street trading or to operate an illegal market in the state once the bill was passed into law.

He said the law would ensure a clean environment, adding that this was one of the cardinal aims of the government.

The Speaker said that the bill, when passed, would check street trading which had claimed many lives on the highways.

He also explained that the law would ensure clean environment and portray us as serious people who understand the importance of cleanliness.

The bill proposes N2,000 fine for anyone caught engaging in street hawking as a first offender without imprisonment while a second offender would pay N3,000 fine without imprisonment and a third offender N5,000 fine or three months imprisonment.
