Ughelli – Chief Sunny Onuesoke, former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Delta State, has urged Ibrahim Kpotum Idris, the Inspector General of Police, to arrest Fulani herdsmen carrying guns and other dangerous weapons, saying that they pose a threat to the unity and economic development of Nigeria.

Onuesoke who spoke in Kaduna during the Muslim Festival, commended Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, for saying that Fulani herdsmen moving with guns, causing violence and fighting with farmers are not Nigerians but foreign terrorists.

Onuesoke said it was high time security agencies and the judiciary charge with terrorism any herdsman caught with guns and causing violence.

“Herdsmen in the ‘70s, 80s and even 90s used to be known for their peaceful dispositions but it baffled me that most of them have become violent and dangerous to farmers and most Nigerian villages especially in the South and middle belt, Onuesoke added.

Onuesoke noted that the activities of herdsmen poses more treat to the economy of Nigeria as many farmers are now afraid to go to their farmlands to cultivate, thereby reducing drastically the agricultural sector’s output.

He suggested that dialogue is the only solution to the farmers and herdsmen clashes in the country and not the sponsorship of obnoxious grazing bills that will further enslave landowners in the southern part of the country.

He pointed out that Nigeria can never come out of its present recession with numerous insecurity threats orchestrated by Boko Haram, Fulani herdsmen and farmers clashes, Biafra agitation by Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra and Indigenous People of Biafra, Niger Delta Avengers, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Movement and others, except they are dealt with through dialogue and mutual understanding.
