Former FIFA and CAF technical member, Adegboye Onigbinde, has warned Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, of the consequences of not qualifying the team for the Africa Cup of Nations, urging the coach to do everything to ensure that Super Eagles berths in Gabon in 2017.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Independent on the backdrop of fierce rival, Egypt, leading Group G of the qualifying campaign, on Tuesday, Onigbinde said it was unacceptable for Nigeria to miss the Nations Cup.

“All I will tell Oliseh is to make sure Nigeria qualifies for the Nations Cup; Nigerian fans are passionate about their team, so he must do everything,” Onigbinde said.

“Before his employers (NFF) engaged him, they considered him experienced, at least based on his playing career, so he should deliver Eagles to Gabon.

The former coach of the team also blamed the team woes on unavailability of a defined playing pattern, saying that this had been the bane of football development in the country.

“Tell me, which pattern does the national team plays? We have no definite pattern, meaning we have no strategy we can call ours.

“I have spent over 20 years clamouring for Nigeria to have a football policy and pattern and what has happened all these years? I will only pray that we get it right and qualify; I know the coach can do it,” he said.

On the invitation of Manchester City player, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Odion Ighalo of Watford following their superlative performances over the weekend, Onigbinde said: “The prerogative to invite any player rests with the coach.

“If I were to be him, I won’t tolerate imposition, so whether Kelechi or the other player is in form should not make us impose them on the coach.

“When I was the coach, nobody will dare impose players on me, so it is only Oliseh that knows which player suits what he wants to achieve with the team.”
