A security official monitoring elections at Abanashehu polling unit in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State has shot dead a voter, identified simply as Mr. Salim, at the unit, eyewitnesses have told newsmen.

The spokesperson for the Plateau State Command of the Nigeria Police, Abuh Emmanuel, confirmed the fatal shooting but declined to disclose the identity of the suspect or the security agency he belongs to.

Similarly, the spokesman of the Special Task Force in Jos (STF), Ikedichi Iweha, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with journalists in Jos.

Details of how the victim was killed were sketchy at the time of filing this report but the incident sparked panic in the neighbourhood of the polling unit as voters and officials took to their heels in anticipation of an escalation of violence.

Earlier, security officials had averted violence at Pajat Ward of Langtang North Local Government Area, when supporters of two rival political parties clashed during accreditation of voters.
