The  Ondo state Government has declared  that its  Free School Shuttle initiative saves parents N113m monthly, even as the number of buses in the scheme’s fleet has risen to 90 from the initial 39.

The scheme’s 3rd anniversary celebration held on June 12, as stakeholders lauded the government for the initiative.

Speaking with newsmen in Akure, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Kayode Akinmade said the school shuttle bus scheme in the state has been transporting no fewer than 53,000 uniform pupils and students across the state to and from their homes on a monthly basis, adding that it has been saving an estimated sum of N113million that parents and guardians would have spent on transportation of their wards.

Giving the breakdown, Akinmade explained that the Mimiko-led administration is currently assisting parents with the sum of #5.3million on a daily basis for the conveyance of 53,000 pupils and students of primary and secondary schools in the state.

Findings, he said, showed that before the scheme was introduced three years ago, most of the beneficiaries were spending an average of #100 as transport fare to and from their schools adding that if 53,000 pupils and students now benefit from the gesture, it means that government is helping the parents with #5.3million daily.

He said the state government has provided 90 luxury buses for the scheme which had been distributed to 15 councils and Oba Ile axis of Akure North Local Government Area of the state adding that the scheme will soon take off at the riverine areas of the state soon.

He insisted that government is irrevocably committed to empowering the citizens towards improving their living standard.

He attributed the support the Mimiko led government is getting from the people to Governor Mimiko’s outstanding leadership qualities, purposeful and visionary administration in the last six years.

According to him, the government’s  remarkable achievements in the Health, Education, Agriculture, Security, Urban Renewal sectors and empowerment of the citizens have not gone unnoticed, hence the constant support the government enjoys from the people.

“Governor Mimiko signed a deal with  the people of the state that he was going to work  for them and he has succeeded in keeping to his promise and the people are appreciative of that too, that is why they have continued to support the government in every way possible” Akinmade said.

He added that the government is committed to lifting the standard of living of the people of the state and also ensure that children in the state have a feel of what government is doing so that they can grow with the responsibilities that comes with governance, hence “when it is their turn, being future leaders, they would also be able to deliver”.
