Osogbo– Osun State Chapter of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has been engulfed in fresh crisis which appeared to have a serious impact on its foundation. The current crisis might not be unconnected with the long dream of Senator Christopher Iyiola Omisore, former Deputy Governor of the state to fly the party’s ticket again come 2018 governorship election in the state.

In what look like commencement of 2018 governorship race within the party, Senator Omisore was said to be scheming to have his stooges at the State Executive Council of the party, to make his dream realizable, but the scheming appeared to be working against him and his cohorts. Omisore’s camp lost out at the PDP State Congress held last Thursday at the Osogbo City Stadium where new officers were elected for the party. Virtually all the party’s leaders in the state including former National Deputy Chairman (South) and BOT member, Alhaji Shuaib Oyedokun, former Minister of State for Defence and Deputy Governor, Erelu Olusola Obada, another BOT member, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Senator Olu Alabi, National Secretary of the party, Professor Wale Oladipo, Engineer Jide Adeniji, Chairman FERMA, Chief Felix Ogunwale among others were against the resolve of Omisore to fly the party’s ticket come 2018.

Before now, all entreaties made by some party elders making Omisore see reasons to shelve his ambition this time around and allow fresh blood were rebuffed. Investigation conducted revealed that Omisore had been nursing ambition to govern the state since 1997 under the defunct UNCP days when he was the sole governorship aspirant on the platform of the party before it was disbanded by the General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s Military Regime. He later joined Alliance for Democracy (AD) with the ambition but was persuaded by the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Late Chief Bola Ige (SAN) to step down for Chief Adebisi Akande in 1999 and eventually became deputy governor under Akande’s administration. Omisore left AD for PDP at the peak of the political crisis which engulfed the party in 2001 when he (Omisore) was eventually impeached.

Since he joined PDP, the struggle to control the soul of the party began in earnest. His political camp began to fix lots of thing in the party structure because of his financial influence. Omisore’s camp reportedly dominated the party in the state when he was Chairman, senate Committee on Appropriation between 2007 and 2011 and does all things to favour his ambition, a development which reportedly forced some chieftains of the party out to join another party.

Among those allegedly forced out of PDP in the state because of Omisore’s factor included Elder Peter Adebayo Babalola, a governorship aspirant of the party then, now a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC); another governorship aspirant, Alhaji Fatai Akinade Akinbade; before the likes of the first executive governor of Osun State, Senator Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke; Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Governor of the state; State Secretary of the party, Major Raphel Towobola (rtd); former State Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Yinka Adeojo; Hon. Teslim Igbalaye among others that could not be mentioned dumped the party for same reason.

Since 2010 when Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola assumed the mantle of leadership in the state, the PDP had been riddled in one crisis or the other which further depleted the party and slimming down the chances of the party of winning election in the state. Those that parted ways because of Omisore’s factor in recent time are Chief Abiola Ogundokun, Chief Francis Fadahunsi and Chief Jide Adeniji, former Chairman, Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA). Chief Ogundokun came to the open to the press raising alarm that Omisore was allegedly threatening his life and sought for the relieve of the State Police Command to provide adequate security for him.

Ogundokun told journalists that the festering crisis within the party was part of the factors responsible for dismal performance of the party in the August 9th 2014 Governorship Election and 2015 General Elections in the State. According to him, “myself and others which I would not want to mention here reported Senator Iyiola Omisore to former President, Goodluck Jonathan of highhandedness, selfish, dictatorial, failure to take advice in the build up to the elections adding that since then, Omisore has allegedly been after his life.

For three consecutive times now between 2011; 2014 and 2015, the Action Congress which transformed to Action Congress of Nigeria and now to All Progressives Congress (APC) had been defeating PDP at the polls in the state. For instance in 2011, the then Action Congress won all the 26 legislative seats in the State House of Assembly; nine seats in the Federal House of Representatives and three senatorial seats in the state, while in 2015, the PDP only managed to secure two out of the nine seats in the House of Representatives for certain obvious reasons. This was why Barrister Kunle Oyatomi; the Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of APC said that the festering crisis within PDP was an indication that Omisore has been totally rejected by the people of the state. He contended that ‘for as long as Omisore persisted in cohesive politics and would not desist from objectionable disregard for truth, he will be unelectable in the state of Osun. “Also for as long as the PDP remains under his leadership, that party will never again be voted to power in the state of Osun. “The truth of the matter’, argued the APC, ‘is that Omisore has a credibility crisis, which renders him suspect as a reliable leader, and no reasonable community or state will risk his future on such a personality’, the APC emphasized As at the time of filling this report, the PDP has splited into two factions with two different secretariats.

One of the secretariats is under the control of Omisore as he donated it for party’s uses while the new secretariat is being controlled by the newly elected Chairman of the party, Hon. Soji Adagunodo. The new secretariat located opposite Biket Hospital along Ikirun Road, Osogbo was commissioned on Monday 16th May 2016 where the inauguration of the newly elected state officers of the party took place. Notwithstanding his recent invitation by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on failed contract running to several millions of Naira, the former speaker of the State House of Assembly and Deputy Governor Candidate to Omisore in the 2014 Governorship Election in the state, Hon. Adejare Bello and some of his foot-soldiers, including Hon. Kunle Alao were observed to have parted ways with Omisore on his ambition.

Speaking after the inauguration of the new party’s office, the newly elected chairman of the party, Hon. Soji Adagunodo said that the decision to have separate party secretariat was to ensure that the party is independent. Adagunodo who described the development as internal wrangling that would soon be resolved, noted that activities of the party would henceforth be carried out from the new secretariat along Ikirun Road. The chairmanship candidate from the camp of Omisore, Dr. Bayo Faforiji when contacted on his mobile phone said that his camp will not want to join issue with what he called ‘illegal action’ saying that the position of the court is clear on the state congress.
