Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, has asked President –Elect, Mohammadu Bihari, to ban states from owning football clubs.

In a memo to the President-elect, on how to save sports from imminent collapse, Oliseh, noted that a law banning states from owning clubs should be put in place.

Consequently, he urged Gen. Buhari to pursue the policy of privatisation of football clubs, on the premise that this would end wastage of scarce resources.

According to him, funds spend on clubs sponsorship  amounts to wastage of scarce resources.

Privatising the clubs, he said, would reduce irregularities and ensure proper utilisation of resources by the states.

According to him, “This is a necessary move to save the clubs and the National league responsible for nurturing future national stars.”

He also asked the President–Elect to wage war on corruption, because it is crippling the sector.

He noted that the special attention given to football by administrators was because of unaccountable money in it, while other sports have been relegated to the background.

“This has to be tackled via better accountability and stiff sentences for inappropriate behaviour.

“Scandalous cases like missing millions from the football association coffers and football matches involving two Nigerian promotion playoff games that ended 79-0 and 67-0 for example should not go unpunished,” he said.
