Lagos – The coordinator of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), Nnimo Bassey, has revealed that oil exploration by multinational companies is a major contributor to environmental warming and climate change effects in Nigeria.

The environmentalist who stated this during an environmental awareness campaign themed ‘Break Free 2016’ said that exploration of crude oil and gas flaring has destroyed the ecosystem, thereby causing environmental warming in the country.

Bassey disclosed that the country can break free from fossil fuel as it cannot afford to continue burning fossil fuel, as the multinationals knew years ago, that oil extraction causes global warming.

“The spread of chemicals in the ocean during oil spillage has affected fishing activities in those parts of the country, while the polluted water has affected the quality and quantity of fish in the ocean.

“It is happening in 15 countries around the world; everybody is saying the use of crude oil, and the use of gas is destroying the planet. It makes the planet to change, everywhere is hot; it is because when oil is burning, it pollutes the air as the weather is changing”, Bassey said

He, however, intimated that the multinationals paid scientist to hide information that revealed that oil exploration was detrimental to human health and the environment, so that they can make profits, however, now the information is said to be coming from the USA.
