Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Lagos State chapter, has condemned the recent threat by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu, against Ndigbo in the state over the April 11 governorship election.

The Lagos monarch had earlier in the week told some Igbo monarchs at a meeting in his palace that their people must vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, who he described as his candidate.

In a statement issued by the State Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chibuzo Azubuike, the group said: “We, in agreement with other Igbo groups, individuals and corporate organisations of Igbo domination and extraction, deplore these inflammatory and ethnic cleansing vituperations.”

The organisation wondered when Oba Akiolu became the APC spokesperson, stressing that the freedom of choice, movement, personal liberty, ownership of property of Ndigbo are guaranteed under the 1999 constitution, and is not subject to the whims and caprices of any individual or group.

“We therefore call for a widely publicised apology to our people and declare that the belated denial being touted by his public relations megaphone cannot work.

“Now is the best time for peace and unity in Nigeria. Let nobody put us asunder.

“Igbo have their right to choose whomsoever they desire as their political leader in Lagos,” the statement added.
