YOUTHS in Ogwashi Uku Community, Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State are poised for a showdown with the federal government and contractors for planning to commission a yet-to-be completed  N3.6 billion dam project in the community.

The Construction of the dam started about 10 years ago and it is meant to generate electricity and also provide water to the community, but unfortunately it has been turned into a beach following its abandonment by the contractors.

Ogwashi Uku is the home town of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweal. The Federal Ministry of Water Resources is said to have slated the commissioning ceremony of the dam to hold on May 13, 2015.

When Saturday Independent visited the dam site, it was discovered that no activity was taking place while students besieged the beach to have fun at the artificial swimming pool there.

But youths and other stakeholders in the area insisted that the N3.6b project can only be inaugurated after completion and that even the access roads constructed by the constructors is yet to be completed.

Saturday Independent investigation revealed that though the federal government has so far paid N500m for turbine, the contractor is yet to provide it while farmers whose crops were damaged during land acquisition for the project have not received a dine despite the fact that N20m has been allegedly paid to the contractors for that purpose.

In his reaction, the former president of Ogwasi Uku Development Union (Odu) Mr Patrick Ajidua, expressed dismay at the slow pace of work on the dam, wondering why the President Jonathan-led administration which has only few days to go was hurrying to commission a project that is not yet completed.

Ajidua therefore urged the incoming administrator of Gen. Buhari to investigate the dam as there is no noticeable presence of Federal Projects in the community except Ogwashi Uku Medium Size Prisons, the Police Mobile Base, and the near outdated Post Office which do not enhance the social development of the community.
