The Ogun Government on Tuesday inaugurated a mini laboratory to detect fake and adulterated drugs in the state.

Inaugurating the laboratory in Abeokuta, state Commissioner for Health, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, said the objective was to check all drugs coming into the Central Medical Store to ensure that genuine ones were given to patients in hospitals.

“We are living in the shadow of danger by taking sub-standard drugs. So with the mini-lab in our state, we can be rest assured of better drugs,” Soyinka said.

He said that government would now be working directly with drug manufacturers to ensure quality products and guarantied supply.

In her address, the Permanent Secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Mrs Modupe Olurin, said the mini laboratory would also serve as a source of revenue generation for the state government.

“Citizens of the state have never enjoyed this kind of privilege that the present administration has introduced to the health sector,” Olurin said.

The representative of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN), Shakira Arasi, said that the laboratory was needed in the Pharmacy Department to complement the efforts of pharmacists in the state.
