The Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has elected David Ofoyeno, a member of the National Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE), as chairman.

Ofoyenu successfully polled 762 to defeat his closest rival (Ofoburuku), who scored 655 from the total valid votes of 1,417 despite that there was a parallel election in Warri axis of the state.

Ofoyeno emerged as the winner at the Cenotaph in Asaba after he keenly contested against Goodluck Ofoburuku, a staff of the state’s Hospital Management Board (HMB).

While the election in Asaba was monitored by officials sent by the national body, the election in Warri was allegedly sponsored by the warring incumbent state chairman, Williams Akporeha.

Akporeha, who doubles as the state chairman of NUPENG, said to be loyal to the Joe Ajaero factional NLC national executive, was declared before 12 noon as factional chairman in Warri.

At the Warri election, the entire former executive members of the congress were allegedly returned unopposed.

Prior to the election, Ofoburuku had banked on his position as the state chairman of the Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) to coast to victory before Ofoyenu, with bulk vote from the Nigeria Union of Teacher (NUT) sprang surprise.
