Traditional Ruler of Umuoha Obuoffiah Autonomous Community in Enugu State, His Royal Highness Eze Obiora Igwesi has blamed the crisis in his community and the recent petition sent to the police against him on detractors who he said were out to blackmail him.

Speaking with Daily Independent in Enugu, Igwesi said that the petition was sponsored by a cabal that according to him “wanted to play down the hand of God.”

Igwesi said that the masterminds of the petition were not comfortable that he was chosen by his people to lead them when Umuoha Obuoffiah autonomous community was created.

The lawyer turned royal father said that having passed through many struggles in life, he would not allow anybody to manipulate him.

He accused a former Accountant General in the State for allegedly sponsoring the petition written by five members of the community which led to his recent interrogation by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“I will start by saying that it is only one of the petitioners that is from my own autonomous community. However, because I am the traditional Head of Obuoffia, I still admit that they are my brothers and are from my community too.

“A petition was written and signed by five persons. These five persons to the best of my knowledge were sponsored. They were sponsored because if you had tried to interview the people that wrote the petition, you will now find out that all of them are nonentities in terms of social classification because if there is a problem in the community, personalities of note would have raised dust.

“But few cabals whipped themselves together and felt that they can play down the hand work of God. You see, this problem has a remote cause. It has been there for several years now. Since, the birth of my father, there has been this problem and various intrigues coming. But because there is God and because God is with us, they have not been able to achieve their aim” Igwesi stated.

He said that when his community was created, the said former Accountant General, who he said had a background in the defunct National Security Organisation (NSO), called him and suggested that he (Igwesi) should be the traditional ruler which he declined.

“I told him I am not interested. That after seeing what my father passed through, I can’t pass through it. But my people kept mounting pressure on me. Several people were coming to beg me that I should be Igwe.  I told them, I wouldn’t have passed through these crucibles in life to become a traditional ruler, with my education. But, when my people insisted, it came to a point I had to yield to their pressure.

“He didn’t know. Of course, when I came up, you don’t expect me to allow anybody to manipulate me. Money meant nothing to me. I came up a frank and realistic young traditional ruler. I was building human beings. I have schools where I am making human beings. I was giving scholarships to people. I devoted my salary to development in my community” Igwesi said.

He added that detractors, who wanted to make his reign uncomfortable, sponsored and wrote all kinds of petitions against him “at Alagbon Close Lagos, Inspector General of Police Abuja and now, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Enugu, making unfounded and baseless criminal allegations.”

He also denied masterminding and supervising an attack against the petitioners at a meeting to resolve the dispute between the community and Methodist Church over the issue of school, stressing that what happened on the day of the meeting was a free for all fight.

Igwesi maintained that the petitioners were on a mission to blackmail him and tarnish his image for insisting that the right things should be done in the community and daring to challenge the cabal that wanted to be dictating for the entire Obuoffiah community.
