Residents of Obong Itam in the Itu Local Government area of Akwa-Ibom State have expressed disappointment over low power voltage distributed to the area by management of the Port-Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDCO), describing such power as useless.

Although receiving normal electricity bills, the community said for the past three months, the power voltage supplied the community could not operate a fan or recharge hand-set let alone operate a refrigerator.

Given the scenario, a worried native of the community, Mr Ini Ekpedeme, explained to our correspondent that the business and economic lives of the people have nose-dived and dangerously skewed.

“The power supply to this community has been very regular but the low voltage has made the regular and steady supply completely inconsequential and in fact, useless. “There has been improvement in electricity supply to Urua Ekpa Junction, Ntak Inyang, Odiok, Akon and the neighbouring communities but that of Obong Itam is embarrassing and very disturbing,” he noted.

A youth leader in the community, Mr. Sylvester Effiong, corroborated the statement, adding that the community had communicated with the authorities of the PHED both officially and informally on the issue but expressed surprise that the PHED has not responded as promised.

“We have complied with the payment of our electricity tariffs but we do not enjoy power in commensurate terms with our payments and not even our petitions to the authorities of the PHED have paid off,” Effiong stated.

He, however, expressed the hope that the power company would find cause to come to the aid of the community to restore full capacity electricity supply to make the lives of the people more meaningful.

However, efforts to speak with the officials of the PHED as at the time of filing this report was unsuccessful.
