The National Union of Pensioners (NUP) has denied reports that its members in Bayelsa State endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva, for the forthcoming December 5 election in the state.
Assistant General Secretary of NUP,Bunmi Ogunkolade, debunked the rumours while addressing newsmen in Yenagoa at the weekend.
The NUP’s clarification came on the heels of reports in which Sylva alleged that the Dickson administration deliberately owed pensioners and that he (Sylva) would pay their arrears if elected again as governor.
Sylva was said to have spoken at a meeting he held with the pensioners in Yenagoa as part of his campaign where he also claimed that his government only owed them N3billion unlike the N20billion being owed them by the Dickson administration.
The former governor had promised to settle the pensioners without any delay if elected and urged them to vote for him at the election.
He was said to have been endorsed by the pensioners for the poll due to his promise to clear the pension arrears.
But Ogunkolade said that the union of pensioners was a non-aligned body and could not have as such endorsed anyone for political office.
He reiterated the stance of NUP national headquarters that the union was non-partisan and would never adopt any governorship candidate for the governorship poll in Bayelsa.
The NUP assistant scribe therefore advised the general public to discountenance the report.
