Ughelli – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, Delta State, has condemned the incessant burglary of its secretariat at Gbiaye Street, Marine Quarters, by suspected armed youths.

Comrades Michael Ikeogwu, Chairman, and Iyete Akpokona Omafuaire, Secretary, in a statement, explained that armed youths scaled the wall of the Press Centre on August 7, 2016, and cut through the windows of one of the rooms occupied by Mr. Bolaji Ogundele, a correspondent of The Nation newspapers, carting away a Lenovo tablet worth N81,000, two expensive phones, power bank and all the chargers while he was asleep.

They lamented that while internal investigation into the dastardly act was going on, a more daring burglary incident occurred on Wednesday, August 16, 2016.

Narrating the incident, they said, “The criminals scaled into the compound at about 3 a.m. and cut through the burglary proof, entered and carted away a 42-inch Sony Plasma TV set installed by the Nigerian Navy and other property worth several hundred thousands of naira.

“The union views the acts as an affront and a challenge by the forces of darkness who are trying to wane their resolve of exposing ills in the society.

“We will not be daunted by the attack but we have resolved with manlike fortitude and philosophical equanimity to fight crime headlong by continuing to expose all criminal activities in the state and country.

The NUJ said, “We will continue in high spirit to exhibit high level of professionalism in the execution of our mandate as we collaborate with other agencies in moving the country forward.”
