The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Eze Duruiheoma has
decried the politcization of past census exercises by Nigerians who see the head count as an avenue for revenue sharing rather than developmental planning.
Duruiheoma who stated this while declaring open a two-day capacity building/sensitization national workshop for public affairs staff of the commission yesterday in Keffi, described as challenging the issues of acceptability and perception in carrying out population census in Nigeria.
He said the task of changing the mindset of Nigerians and convincing the government on the need to expend its resources on the all-important exercise rest on their shoulders.
“There is the compelling need to create a conducive atmosphere for the commission activities, dissolve apathy, remove bias, cultivate public ownership and secure the cooperation of stakeholders and development partners” he added.
Duruiheoma noted that the training is targeted at sensitizing the officers on the essence, methodology and census strategies, enlightening them on the advocacy and publicity components of the exercise, as well as equiping the officers with the appropriate skills for effective performance.
While soliciting for cooperation of state and local government as well as traditional rulers for grassroots mobilization, the NPC boss reassured Nigerians that the head count which would be conducted with cutting edge technology, would be historic in all its ramification with minimal error proof in view of its biometric undertone.
