The three times Africa champions sits second with 4 points behind group leaders, Egypt, which has six points after two round of matches. Both teams will square up against each other in March next year, in a match that could determine the sole winner of the group.

The former Volyn midfielder was in the starting line-up as the Super Eagles crushed the La Sao of Chad 2-0 at the Ahmedu Bello Stadium in Kaduna in June but failed to make the list of the invited foreign professional that played out a goalless draw against the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.

However, Babatunde, who was a revelation for the team in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, told Daily Independent that the team’s target was to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations having missed the last edition, which was hosted by Equatorial Guinea and won by Cote d’Ivoire.

“I am confident Super Eagles will qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. I am quite sure that the players understand what it means to participate in the bi-annual tournament,” he began.

“Tthe players are committed and hungry to banish the nightmare of the team’s failure to qualify for the last edition in Equatorial Guinea.

“It was a painful experience and the players know that any further mistakes could cost the team the ticket. The truth is, nothing can stop Nigeria’s dream of making the Nations Cup.” he said

Currently with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Ukraine league, Babatunde revealed that he could not wait to see the Super Eagles wipe his tears of not qualifying for the last edition.

“I feel bad that Nigeria did not qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. But in football, sometimes you win and sometime you lose. I had an injury and cried when the team failed to qualify because I love the team and its spirit.” he said.
