The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said it is unaware of plans by the the Federal Government to extend the appointment of its Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

Jega’s five year tenure as the commission’s helmsman ends on June 30 having been appointed  in June 2010 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, suceeding Prof. Maurice Iwu.

Jega, who is the only chairman of the electoral body to conduct two general elections in Nigeria’s electoral history, had said he would not be seeking for a fresh term in office. He also said he would decline the offer of renewal if granted.

Some online reports have however claimed that President Muhammadu Buhari is contemplating renewing Jega’s appointment so as to consolidate on the success recorded by the electoral body in the conduct of the 2011 and 2015 general elections.

When contacted the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Kayode Idowu however said the commission is unaware of plans to extend the tenure of his boss at the moment.
