Emeka  Okafor, Aba.

The Abia State branch of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has declared that it has no plans of calling on its workers to embark on any industrial strike as a result of the yet o be settled arrears of salaries owed the local; government workers n the State.

State Chairman of NULGE, Comrade Ijoma Onyenaucheya who made clarification while reacting to a recent protest embarked by the Council staff of Umuahia South Local government last Tuesday over alleged deduction from their September salaries observed that the said deduction was not done intentionally.

“It was not a deduction par say, what happened is that our arrears of salaries being owed apart from October is August and September and the Bail out Committee in addressing the issue brought out August and September salaries of our members, the correct fact is that  government in releasing the one month salary which they did not rerelease 100% of the salary but released 90%  and that is where this problem has started,, what was released could not go round  all the council workers”.

On the verification exercise of council workers in the State as ordered by the State government as condition for he payment of salaries, Comrade Onyenaucheya said he union was not against the position of government on the conduct of the exercise.

“As a Union, we are not against the he verification exercise, wham we want the government to do is to pay workers their salaries, the administration still have more four years or even beyond to go, the verification exercise could be done gradually.

He assured Council workers in the State hat the administration of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has given its commitment n the settlement f all arrears of salaries owed to workers n the State.

“The Union is on top of the situation, we have to handle this situation calmly and maturely, this government is sincere, they are going to pay between now and next week”, the NULGE State chairman assured.
