Issa Aremu, former Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has said there was no justification whatsoever for the non-payment of workers’ salary and pensions by state governors, since it was a human right for every working person to get his due remuneration as and when due.

Aremu also commended some state governors for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries and the pensions of retirees.

The union leader made special mention of Lagos, Edo, Kwara and Kaduna as “labour-friendly” states who pay wages, pensions, promotion and yearly increments of their civil servants and pensioners.

Noting that there was no justification for denying workers and pensioners their entitlements, Aremu said in a statement on Sunday that governors who are unwilling or unable to pay workers must put an end to the “crisis of workers’ compensation”.

Since mid-2015, several state governments in Nigeria have found it difficult to meet their obligations to their workers and retirees, with some now owing as many as 10 moths’ wages and pensions, citing declining oil revenue and federal allocation as excuses.

The trend has continued despite bailouts from the federal government to some states to cover salary arrears.

Aremu, general secretary of the Textile Workers’ Union, also called on government ministries at federal and state levels to remit contributory pensions of their workers to Pension Fund Administrators. He also called for more effort and vigilance on the part of labour leaders, notably the NLC.
