The United Nations has again called on African nations to be wary of the dangers of the dreaded HIV/AIDS pandemic ravaging many nations of the world warning that as at today, no country is free of the scourge of disease.

The Country Director, United Nations AIDS Programme in Nigeria Mr Bilalis Camara gave admonition yesterday when he led a team on a courtesy visit on the Majority Leader House of Representatives Hon. Femi Gbajabiamilla in his office.

According to Bilalis, more than 4 million persons have been infected by the dreaded HIV/AIDs pandemic in Nigeria and the world body had spent more than $700 million on the fight against the scourge.

“What we are facing today is pathetic, the clear message is that we should share in the responsibility, there is need for global solidarity, investment outside must match investment inside “he stated.

While urging Nigeria to maintain her leadership role in Africa,  he also identified corruption as a major challenge in the fight against HIV/AIDS scourge in many countries.

Speaking while responding to the message delivered by the leader of the team, the House Leader,  Hon. Femi Gbajabiamilla  noted that the number of those already infected by the HIV/AIDS scourge is quite alarming.

The lawmaker pointed out that funding is a major challenge to the efforts by many nations to contain the scourge of HIV/AIDS even as he said that the world is now a global village as what affects one country also affects another.

He therefore urged the international community as well as donor agencies to step up their  support to national governments in terms of funding to contain the disease.

He further pledged the resolve of the House to make the fight against the spread of the disease more successful in the areas of appropriation of funds as well as legislation.
