All is now set for the NNPC Junior Tennis Championship taking place in Kaduna from Tuesday November 3 to Sunday December 8.

The ITA Junior Circuit championships famous for throwing up rivalries will be missing Angel Mcleod the national junior champion whose mother was tragically shot dead by a police officer in Lagos and Marylove Edwards who is withdrawing to sympathise with her rival.

Marylove who has improved very significantly and beat a top 10 senior player in a recent exhibition, said she was looking forward to playing against Angel. “But with this incident I am not sure I can get the kind of challenge that she will give me from the other players and I am really sad about what happened to her, I am not happy at all.”

Over 108 players have so far registered for the tournament and organisers say this number is bound to rise as Kaduna based players and players from neighbouring States have a habit of flooding the place on registration day.

According to the ITA, all players from outside Kaduna will be accommodated while all players will be fed three square meals each day and properly kitted.

“Our hospitality programme has helped to attract more young talents to the sport and widened the junior base of exceptional talents that are coming through.” A statement from the Academy said.

The NNPC Junior Circuit is moved around the country to help identify talent from all parts of the nation. The Kaduna tournament will be followed by the NNPC Junior Masters to be held in Lagos mid December.
