Scott Nnaji, coach of Nigeria’s national women basketball team, D’Tigress, has urged the dropped members of the team to work harder, while admitting that they still form the nucleus of the team.

The women national team is presently camping in Abuja ahead of the Olympic qualifying tournament, which comes up in France. Before then, the ladies will take on Turkey in a double-header international friendly match on May 27 and 28.

They will head to France thereafter for the qualifying tournament, where they will confront Belarus and South Korea in Group B of the qualifying events, which is scheduled for June 13 to 19.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Nnaji said he reduced the players in camp in order to fully concentrate on the task at hand, while debunking the insinuation that the ones that left are not up to standard.

“We watched the players intensely for about a week and decided that some of them will have to go home. We reduced the players in order for us to concentrate on 15 players only.

“I must confess that the camping has been good and every player has given a good account of herself. Let me also make it clear that those went home are not totally bad, but they have to work harder.

“They will remain the nucleus of the team as they develop and with time, become the stars that will rule the national team in feature.”
