Lagos – Eneffiong Udobong, ace Nigerian athlete and Olympic gold medalist, has said that the country’s preparations ahead of the Rio Olympic Games are not good enough for medals.

Udobong, who has been very active in the development of Nigerian athletes, made the comment on Sunday in a television sports programme monitored in Lagos, adding that only a special prayer would help Nigeria.

“According to him, “Nigeria’s preparations for the Olympics are not good enough to guarantee victory,” he said.

He was, however, quick to assert that Nigeria would not be a total failure, saying: “But some of the federations and their athletes have been putting up good efforts and that could guarantee a medal.

“It could be bronze or any medal, but I don’t want to agree that Nigeria will not win anything.”

On the federation he thought could spring some surprises, Udobong said, “Wrestling Federation has been striving hard to see that it achieves something with efforts of the President, Daniel Igali.”

He meanwhile, went spiritual, saying: “There would have to be some special ‘prayer warriors’ to help Nigeria at the Olympics to win something.”

Udobong debunked the rumour that foreign athletes should buy their tickets for the Games. He said: “There is reservation; you may be asked to buy but it (the money) will definitely be refunded.

“It is not anything strange; during the African Games in Congo, some foreign athletes bought tickets and they were refunded,” he concluded.
