A former Minister of Transport, Chief Ebenezer Babatope has called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to urgently address the great suffering and hunger being experienced by Nigerians before it gets out of hand.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Babatope who said Nigerians who voted for the APC in the last general elections are still waiting to see the change promised by the party seven months after, added that things were better when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held sway as the ruling party.

“2015 was a year the APC conjure their magic of change and seven months after, we are still waiting for the change. I do hope that now Nigerians will learn better that the year 2015 did not improve their fortunes at all”.

“On whether Nigerians are already regretting voting for the APC, well, I can’t speak for Nigerians because they expressed their vote in the popular election that swept Buhari and APC to poweral.

“But I know very well that things were not this bad when the PDP was in power by this time last year”.

Also speaking on Buhari’s anti- corruption war which some Nigerians have described as selective, Babatope, who is a member of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) said “On the anti-corruption war, there are two ways of looking at it. In all fairness, President Buhari has done very well to justify his determination to attack corruption in Nigeria. But we are saying that they must not mix problems of party organisation with the problem of wiping out corruption in the society”.

“Every political party must strive to win an election and it is true that any political party in power must not use that position to abuse the trust the Nigerian people have in them. Buhari himself came into power through the patronage of his people in APC”.

“There are some APC members who gave him money during the election. So they must draw proper line between what they are doing about corruption and what they are doing about promoting political party organisation above what it should be”.

“I think if they draw that line, they will be able to help themselves and the country. That notwithstanding, Buhari has done well in his anti-corruption fight but there are still many things to be done”.

On his expectations for 2016, Babatope said the PDP will continue its role as a strong and virile opposition but urged the president to quickly address the growing poverty amongst Nigerians

“As for 2016, l I can say is that those of us who are remaining in the PDP will do everything on our part to ensure that there is a good opposition that will keep the ruling party on its toes. APC should tell Nigerians what they intend to do in 2016”.

“But the suffering in the country is too much. If they have not known that, I am telling them. The suffering is very, very terrible. Nigerians are suffering. The hunger is biting and something must be done very quickly about it” he said.
