Former national 400m hurdles champion Maria Usifo has commended the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for holding the athletics trials despite sponsorship challenges.

Cross River State declined hosting the championship following lack of funds which necessitated a last minute pull-out.

Usifo said in chat with Daily Independent that in other climes, it would have been difficult to find an alternative, but the federation surmounted the challenges and went ahead to organize the Championships which was by all standards a huge success.

“I was surprised AFN was able to host the championship despite Cross River State last minute excuses. It shows AFN’s good thinking and overwhelming interest for athletes and their carrier.”

“I hope the athletes would replicate the gesture through their performance at the World Championships and All Africa Games.”

As a former national hurdles champion, Usifo commended Miles Ukaoma and Amaka Ogoegbunam on their breath taking performance at the trials, a feat she said was last witnessed a decade ago at the national stadium in Lagos. Both athletes won their events with commanding time.

Speaking to Daily Independent in Warri Usifo said, “Both hurdlers showed good coaching techniques and executed it to the admiration of spectators. Although, at the IAAF world championship level, the stakes are high, but with determination, they will excel and may go further to set new national and Africa records in the event.”
