Nigeria hopes of winning a medal at the Rio Olympics brightened on Thursday with her qualification for the final of the women’s 4x100m.
The final will hold on Friday (today).
Running in Heat 2 that has USA, Germany and Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria placed second behind Germany and picked one of the three automatic tickets. Germany and Trinidad and Tobago picked the other two automatic tickets.
The Nigerian team ran a season best time of 42.55secs with Germany winning the heat in 42.18secs. Trinidad and Tobago placed third with a Season Best time of 42.62secs.
The Nigerian team has Gloria Asumnu, Blessing Okagbare, Jennifer Madu and Agnes Osazuwa
But the heat witnessed a bizarre incident as defending champion; USA team lost their baton at the first exchange. USA, it is believed would appeal their failure to finish the race on time as the team dropped their baton.
It looks like Allyson Felix, who started the relay for the USA, was hit by the Brazilian in the lane next to her, she stumbles in the process and tried to throw the baton to English Gardner. She picks the baton, passes it to Gardner who continues the race.
But the IAAF, however, disqualified the trio of USA, Brazil and Kazakhatan over rule infractions.
Should USA appeal against the incident that led to them dropping their baton, the team might be asked to run another race and would display China should they better China’s 42.70secs.
The other qualifiers are Jamaica that ran a Season Best (SB) of 41.79secs, Great Britain (41.93secs), Ukraine (42.49 SB), Canada (42.70secs SB) and China (42.70secs).
