Nigeria Has More Basketball Talents Than Angola’

Former Nigerian international, Julius Nwosu, has said the problem with basketball in Nigeria is not as a result of scarcity of talents but inadequate planning and implementation of policies.

Speaking to Daily Independent during the final of the FIBA Afro Basketball Zone3 3X3 championship in Lagos on Sunday, Nwosu said if Angola has half of the talent Nigeria is blessed with, it would have won world championship.

“All the guys I used to play against in Angola are the ones managing their federation. We are not Angolans, we are Nigerians. We should look at what we can do. We have a lot of players; we need to reach out to them, bring them home and support them. When you take care of your players, they will give their best to you.

“Some of our players in the NBA left Nigeria with bad taste in their mouth, so when you ask such players to come back, they will think twice. Nigeria is blessed with talents, but talents alone cannot win championships. There must be some programmes and plans that can bring out the best in those talents.

“If Angola has half of the talents Nigeria has, they will win world championship. Nigeria is far better than Angola in talents, but they know how to manage what they have. In 1997, we were in the same group with them, Egypt and Senegal. We defeated all of them.

“The group was split and we beat everybody again before beaten Senegal in the final. Angola was there and didn’t qualify for the semis. So the problem is that we are not doing enough for the vast talents Nigeria is blessed with.”

Nwosu attributed the lack of bite on D’Tigers to inadequate planning and poor management of the game in Nigeria.
