US-based Gloria Asumnu on Thursday evening won the women 100m at the ongoing National Trials in Warri albeit in a disappointing time of 11.42secs, and failed to make the AFN Beijing list for not meeting the IAAF qualifying standard.

Asumnu was the star to watch in Warri after Nigeria queen of the track, Blessing Okagbare, pulled out of the trials due to injury but Asumnu failed to impress with her performance.

Another foreign based athlete, Stephanie Kalu, finished second in 11.47secs, while Nigeria Customs athlete, Deborah Odeyemi, finished third after returning in time of 11.66secs.

With their performance, none of the athlete has made the mark for World Championship 100m flat for women.

Speaking after the race, Asumnu said that she was r disappointed especially with her failure to qualify for the World Championships, but promised to come back on Friday (today) for the 200m.

“I have qualified for the World Championships relay, but for the 100m no, but I will have another opportunity tomorrow (Friday) for the 200m,” she said.

“I have 10 days to qualify for the 100m flat, now I will be looking for meets in Europe and I believe I can make it for the World Championships.”

In some of the other events decided on Thursday, Lindsey Weyinmi, won the 100m hurdles women in 13.40secs ahead of Amusan Tobiloba and Ayemoba Grace, while Tyron Akins won the men’s 110m hurdles for men in 13.68secs.

The trials continue on Friday (today) in Warri with the finals of Men’s 100m top of the list of the events for the day.
