LAGOS – The African Development Bank (AfDB), Global Environment Fund (GEF) and KFW of Germany, have pledged N24.75tr ($125m); N2.37tr ($12m); and, 34 million Euros, respectively to the Niger Basin Authority (NBA) appeal fund to combat the effect of climate change and flooding suffered by countries along the Niger Basin. The appeal fund also received $27 million from member-countries and $13.5 million from beneficiaries respectively.

The sum was realised at a meeting of the NBA alongside Donor Partners for the implementation of the Programme for the Integrated Development and adaptation to Climate Change in the Niger Basin (PIDACC/NB) held in Abuja.

Dr. Toupta Boguena, Executive Secretary of NBA, stated that from the first quarter of 2017, the body would commence the implementation of the PIDACC programmes simultaneously in all member-countries, in order to speedily bring succour to the plight of the inhabitants of the Niger Basin. She called on member-countries to be more committed to the institution by providing human and material resources necessary for effective implementation of the programmes.
