The Nigerian Institute of Cultural Orientation (NICO) has urged the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to explore ways for collaboration on promoting cultural orientation.

This is contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Lagos by NOUN’s Director of Media and Publicity, Malam Ibrahim Sheme, and made available to newsmen.

It said that the Executive Secretary of NICO, Prof. Barclays Ayakoroma, made the call during a courtesy visit to the vice chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Abdalla Adamu.

The statement added that Ayakoroma was of the view that one of such avenues could be the setting up of a Postgraduate Diploma in Cultural Orientation in the university.

It added that working in collaboration with the university would give credence to what NICO offers and enhance the acceptability of the certificate which the institute offers its graduates.

The statement noted that the vice-chancellor of NOUN urged Nigerians to embrace cultural tolerance.

It said that Adamu was of the view that there was need for Nigerians to see themselves as one people irrespective of cultural difference and orientation.

“It is common place to hear people say, let us forget our differences but I think the right thing to say should be let us accept our differences.

“It is the acceptance of our differences that will make us tolerate one another.

“It is our differences that make us the unique people that we are and there is beauty in diversity,” the statement quoted Adamu as saying.

“God who created us, created us as different people.

“We must accept those differences and should collaborate to find a way of removing this stereotype through cultural acceptance,’’ he said.
