The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Bem Angwe, has expressed readiness of the commission to

investigate all allegations of human rights abuses in Nigerian National Salt Company (NNSC) in Delta State, levelled against the Federal Government.

Prof. Angwe gave the commitment following a petition the commission received from Falana & Falana’s Chambers titled, “Complaints Against

the Federal Government of Nigeria on the forceful forfeiture of shares and properties held by Engr. Kolawole O.A. Koiki in the New Nigeria

Salt Company Ltd (NNSC) and abuse of his human rights”.

The petition alleged forceful acquisition of 45 per cent  shares in the company and the entire land where the company was located without any

compensation by the then Federal Military Government following the provisions of Decree 27 of 1978, which also prevented the legal owner

of the property from seeking redress in the court of law.

Prof. Angwe assured that the commission would assiduously carry out its mandate of assisting victims of human rights violations by providing appropriate redress and remedies.

He further stated that following its standing order and rules of procedure, the commission has set necessary machinery in place and

has since commenced preliminary investigation into the matter.
