A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Bauchi State, G44, on Tuesday embarked on environmental sanitation to clear filth along major streets in the Bauchi metropolis.

Leader of the NGO, Alhaji Mahmud Adamu, who disclosed this in Bauchi at the official launch of the exercise, said the refuse dump has become an eye soar to both the residents and visitors.

Adamu observed that there were refuse dumps, heaped in various locations within the metropolis over months with no efforts by government officials to clear them.

He expressed fear that the town may witness an outbreak of communicable diseases, especially with the commencement of rainfall in the state.

Adamu said that the metropolis was too filthy with visitors that are trooping into the ancient town for the swearing-in of the new administration in the state.

He said that the organisation had mobilised 37 tippers, three lorry-loaders, tractors, spades and other materials for the task.

The leader called on members of the public to support the NGO by de-silting their gutters, culverts and other filthy sites.

He commended the Governor-elect, Mohammed Abubakar, and the Deputy Governor-elect, Nuhu Gidado, for granting them the permission to conduct the exercise.

The Governor-elect, Abubakar, while declaring the exercise open, commended the NGO for the initiative.

Abubakar said that the initiative would complement government’s efforts toward sustaining a clean environment.

He recalled that during the last visit of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to the state capital, he expressed worry over the filthy condition of the metropolis.

The Governor-elect called on other organisations to emulate the initiative by G44 to clean up the town.

He also urged the residents to participate in the two-day exercise to clean up their environment.
