A Lagos-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Ajoke Ayisat Afolabi Foundation, has provided scholarship to over 500 orphans across Nigeria in the last one year.

Coordinator of the organisation in Northern Nigeria, Hajiya Adama Shehu-Aliyu, disclosed this while distributing food items for Ramadan to orphans, the needy and vulnerable persons in Zaria, Kaduna State.

She said that the scholarship covered students at the primary school to university level.

She said that the foundation was founded by an industrialist, Dr Taiwo Afolabi.

“He inherited this act of kindness from his mother. So after she died, he took over to build on where she stopped. Due to his kindness, he decided to extend his hand of goodness to the North.

“We have been helping people in various ways by giving out scholarship to the motherless or fatherless, providing skills acquisition training in areas like POP, tiling, knitting and soap making,” she said.

The coordinator said that the foundation was also assisting the needy with raw food items during other festivities like Sallah, Christmas and Easter.

She said that over 1,000 persons, mostly orphans, widows and the less-privileged in Zaria would benefit from the exercise.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that items distributed included rice, vegetable oil, millet and sugar.
