The Vice President of the Nigerian Golf Federation (NGF), Kunle Dada, has emphasised the need for the sponsorship of its programmes, saying such would boost its target of making Nigeria a golf destination.

In a chat in Lagos on Tuesday, Dada added that the on-going NGF Kiddies/Youth Golf/Clinic Zonal Championship was a pilot project in its bid to develop game in the country.

Basking on the success of the just concluded, South West Zone’s edition in Ibadan Dada said, “So far on the NGF’s zonal championship, I can tell you we are interestingly moving forward looking at the participation and players’ performance.

“I’m so elated when I watch this junior players display some ‘professional’ skills in the game, it gives a hope of better future for the game in Nigeria.

“However, NGF’s biggest challenge presently is funds; this is the reason we are calling on individuals and corporate organisations for sponsorship of NGF tournaments. We want this present Board’s target of making Nigeria a strong golf nation to be realistic in the nearest feature.

“What NGF is doing now is just a pilot championship. By next year, the championship will be in full swing throughout the six geo-political zones of the country,” Dada explained.

Also speaking, the NGF Youth Development Director, Emmy Kong, revealed that the remaining zonal championship for North West and North Central would hold this month (July), just as the final comes up tentatively in September at a venue yet to be announced.

She urged parents to encourage their children and wards to take advantage of the championship as it was opened to all interested persons in the country.
