Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) has called on well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the gestures of former Senate President, David Mark, in the development of golf.

Speaking on behalf of the Federation during a championship recently at Otukpo, Benue State Secretary General, Taiwo Oriss, said that Senator Mark’s people’s oriented initiative in golf development should be appreciated and emulated by stakeholders.

“Senator Mark has started something very good in terms of golf development in this country and NGF is highly appreciative of it, because it is people’s oriented programme; taking golf to the public.

“I’ve gone round the course and it is amazing that an individual could build such a massive golf edifice where people go to train free of charge. The same man has an academy with over 250 kids who are on scholarship and they are all doing very well at their level,” the secretary said.

Against this backdrop the secretary said, “To sustain this development, it’s important for stakeholders and other well-meaning individuals to emulate Mark by building golf courses to accelerate the growth of the game.

“This is because the game is now growing in Nigeria and we need more courses that can serve the public. This is because not everybody can afford playing in private clubs due to the cost.

“This can be done through public private partnership to reduce the burden. It is not impossible, people should endeavour to be part of the process of developing the game in Nigeria,” he concluded.

It would be recalled Senator Mark volunteered to sponsor the just concluded NGF Junior Golf Finals as the Federation could not get a sponsor.
