Twelve years after Godwin Izilein coached Super Falcons to win the African Women’s Championship (AWC) in South Africa, the coach and his assistants are still being owed their entitlements totaling N9 million ($27,750) by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
A breakdown of the figure according to the head coach, Izilein, shows that he is being owed N3.9 million ($12,000), while the assistant coach, Lizzy Ogiemwoyi, is owed N3.1 million ($9,750) and the Welfare Officer, Ann Chiejine, is owed 1.9 million ($6,000).
According to Izilein, “I have a family and I need to take care of them. The other two ladies who were my assistants, Ogiemwoyi and Chiejine, also need to assist their families too. We worked for the money; we should be paid, because it is our entitlement.”
Izilein, who is the immediate past Edo State Technical Director in the state’s football academy, also said that it was a breach of contract for the government to renege on its agreement with them.
The situation is made more pathetic even as the officials have written series of reminder to the various football authorities and sports ministers to wade into the matter, all to no avail.
“We wrote series of letter to the NFF and to Aminu Maigari when he was in charge and also the Sports Ministers that came and gone, nothing happened. Now, we have written Amaju Pinnick and he has confirmed the letter is on his table and that it would be looked into; we are waiting,” Izilein said.
Only in January President Muhammadu Buhari, rewarded sportsmen and women who did the country proud in their sports in cash and kind, but the 2004 Falcons “golden” officials were left out even as they have genuine and legal case with the NFF. One then wonders the rational in the rewards and awards by government as questions are being asked whether the trophy won by Falcons in 2004 is not the same as the ones won by the other teams since 1985 to date.
