The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 148 suspected drug traffickers between January and May in Benue State.

The state Commandant of the agency, Mrs Florence Ezeonye, disclosed this at the weekend at the commemoration of the 2015 United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The commandant also disclosed that about 1271.52 kilogrammes of drugs of different types were seized from drugs traffickers in the state within the period under review.

Ezeonye said that the command had recorded considerable success in the counselling and rehabilitation of drug addicts with about 226 dependent persons set free from drug abuse.

She disclosed that about 4.529 hectares of Indian hemp farms were also destroyed by the command.

The commandant warned that the NDLEA would not relent in its fight to incapacitate drugs cartels in the state.

Also speaking in a message, the wife of the state Governor, Mrs Eunice Ortom, lamented the adverse effects of drugs on the society and its future generation.

She stated that about 123,000 drug related deaths were recorded in the country according to 2012 statistics. Mrs. Ortom noted that the people who abused the drugs most were youths, advising that as leaders of tomorrow it was important for them to shun such vices.

The Governor’s wife stated that there could never be any meaningful development in any society in the midst of drug abuse and trafficking.

She pledged to partner with relevant agencies to frontally attack the root of drug abuse in the society.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2015 theme is: “Let’s Develop Our Lives, Communities and Identities without Drugs’’.
