Team Nigeria on Monday won their fifth gold at the Rio paralympic games through Ndidi Nwosu competing in the Power Lifting event.
Nwosu lifted 140kg to equal the Paralympics Record (PR), which gave her the gold. France’s Souhad Ghazouani came second after she lifted 135kg, while Egypt’s Amany Ali came third.
Nwosu, who was initially looking like she was going to settle for Bronze, stepped up in her very last attempt and lifted 140kg to equal the Paralympics Record (PR) to usurp France’s Souhad Ghazouani who previously was in the lead.
The Nigerian was far behind the two counterparts quite early in the event, but she perfected her strategy to take the giant stride that produced the gold medal in the end.
Nwosu initially wanted to go for 127kg, but later requested for 140kg in her third attempt, as the Nigerian clearly took it ahead of the other two competitors. He finally triumphed when both opponents failed to match her; as she equaled Ghazouani’s PR. ‘
Frenchwoman Ghazouani wanted to respond, but failed her attempt at 145kg as her Nigerian counterpart took GOLD having had a clean slate. Team Nigeria have so far won five gold, two silver and one bronze. Meanwhile, Nigerian athlete Lovina Onyegbule was disqualified in her 200m -T11 race which she won earlier on.
Paul Kehinde twice broke the men’s -65kg World Record (WR) to win Nigeria’s second gold in the Powerlifting event. Esther Onyema won silver in the women’s -55kg earlier on.
Esther Onyema has earlier taken Team Nigeria’s medal tally to three after winning silver in the women’s -55kg Power Lifting event on Saturday.
