The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) on Wednesday called for an intensive public awareness on the importance of mobile banking in the country.

The Managing Director, NDIC, Alhaji Umaru Ibrahim, made the call during his closing remark at the 2015 Financial Correspondents Workshop organised by the corporation in Ilorin.

According to Ibrahim, majority of the general public are still very much in the dark about the advantages of the mobile banking services, mobile payment systems, and pass through deposit insurance.

This, according to him, calls for intensive public awareness to ensure the access of the mobile payment system in the country.

He named some of the challenges confronting the e-banking, mobile payments and deposit insurance to include inadequate and poor infrastructure arising from lack of constant power supply.

“Other challenges are poor linkage access roads to remote locations and inadequate telecom services in most locations and high overhead cost on operators relying on alternative power source.

He noted the continued hike in banking system fraud and forgeries in recent years which were mostly Web based and ATM cards related.

He said there was urgent need for regulatory intervention to achieve much desired financial discipline in the banking system.

The NDIC boss commended efforts of the media in collaborating with regulators of the financial system and urged them to continue enlightenment of the public towards the various financial services.
