N’Delta Militancy: Urhobo Group Hosts Visiting Hosts U.S Delegation

Ughelli – The Urhobo Progress Union has played host to officials of the United States Consulate in Nigeria who were on a fact finding mission to the Urhobo nation on the way out of the current waves of agitations and militancy in the Niger Delta.

The team was hosted at the Effurun GRA residence of Chief Mike Ederhewhevbe First Deputy President General and National Treasurer of UPU Worldwide, who held brief for the National President, Chief Joe Omene, who was away on UPU assignment to the republic of Ghana.

The meeting which held behind closed door saw officials of the US Consulate in Nigeria and other officials from Washington DC led by Maria Davydenko, Political Officer, US Consulate in Lagos leading the dialogue with the Urhobo Progress Union which, according to a source inside the meeting, was concerned on the way forward for the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole. The US officials, we were told, had urged the UPU leaders to help identify the issues responsible for the inflammation of tempers and passions lately in the Niger Delta and proffering solutions to same.

At the end of the meeting which held behind closed door, the UPU expressed gratitude to the Government and people of the United States of America for the keen interest in finding solutions to the various economic and social challenges facing Nigeria and for the honour of taking the views of the Urhobo nation on the salient issues of renewed militant activities in the Niger Delta region.

The United Nations had expressed preparedness to help Nigeria establish peace and find solutions to the ongoing violence in the Niger Delta region so as to create an enabling environment to ensure that peace reigns in Nigeria.
