Mr Jide Awe, the Chairman, Conferences Committee, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to embark on public sensitisation on the Cyber Crime Law.

Awe said in Lagos that increased awareness of the law by the citizenry would introduce sanity in the information technology sector.

The Cybercrime Act was signed into law on May 15 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

It stipulates that any crime or injury on critical national information infrastructure, sale of pre-registered SIM cards, unlawful access to computer systems, cyber-terrorism, among others will be punishable.

Awe said that many Nigerians were not aware of the existence of the Cyber Crime Law.

He urged all Nigerians to conform to the provisions of the law, saying that it was passed for their own good.

“We even tell NCS members to conform with the law in order to serve as an example to other people,’’ the NCS official said.
Awe said that the NCS had started advocacy on full implementation of the law by the government.

He said that the law, when fully implemented would protect and secure corporations and government institutions from being compromised.

The NCS official said that many crimes like hacking into websites by unscrupulous people were due to lack of proper cyber security and monitoring.

He stressed that the law would curb the incessant crimes perpetrated online on a daily basis.
