NCRI Workers Embark On Strike

Staff of National Cereal Research Institute (NCRI), Baddegi in Niger State on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, commenced an indefinite industrial strike, demanding for the removal of the Acting Executive Director of the institute for alleged mismanagement of the institution’s finances.

The aggrieved workers under the auspices of Academic Staff Union of Research Institute (ASURI), Senior Staff Association (SSA) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) thronged to the institute’s premises and paralyzed all official activities.

Addressing journalists on behalf of the other unions, Chairman of ASURI, Mr. Wayagari Joseph Wayas, accused the Acting Executive Director, Dr. Lawrence Ogunremi, of misappropriating the institute’s second and third quarter capital allocation amounting to N110 million.

The unions also alleged that the acting executive director diverted N8 million through fraudulent contracts awarded for the purchase of furniture which were never supplied.

According to him, “The Acting Executive Director, Dr. I. T. Ogunremi and the Head of Finance and account, Mrs. I. F Arogundade were earlier petitioned on gross misappropriation and misused of capital allocation for 2nd and 3rd quarter to N110, 000, 000. 00.

“Dr. Ogunremi also single handedly awarded fraudulent contract to furnishing of Researchers’ offices to the tune of N8, 198, 948.20 without the tenders’ board meeting. Investigations also revealed that no such items were purchased and supplied at all”, Wayas also explained.
